Equine Preventative Care

Regular vaccination and parasite prevention are important to maintain the health of your horse. Preventative care is available at Animal Medical Center or may be performed at your farm or ranch.

These include:

  • Vaccinations
  • Deworming
  • Wellness exams
  • Other preventative care options

Call us today to schedule an appointment. Ambulatory care services are also available.

We can help determine the best vaccine schedule for your horse based on their individual risk. Current general recommendations are:

Adult horse vaccine recommendation:

  • EEE/WEE/tetanus/flu/rhino (twice annually)
  • West Nile (annually before start of vector season)
  • Rabies (annually)
  • Coggins (annually)

Pregnant mare vaccine recommendations:

  • Pneumabort (5, 7, and 9 months in gestation)
  • EEE/WEE/tetanus/flu/rhino (30 days after foaling)

Foal vaccine recommendations:

  • EEE/WEE/tetanus/flu/rhino/West Nile (4-6 months, booster 4 weeks later)
  • Rabies (6 months)

Routine Equine Dentistry

Routine dental care can greatly benefit your horse's overall health. It is recommended to have your horse's teeth checked every year. Poor oral health can lead to the following:

  • Dropping feed
  • Weight loss
  • Bleeding gums
  • Fighting the bit
  • Bad breath

We recommend an annual dental cleaning to prevent the above problems from occurring. In order to maintain the horse's comfort, appropriate sedation is maintained throughout the procedure. The horse's head is placed in a brace (also known as a speculum). This allows the veterinarian to examine the horse's mouth for other concerns such as deciduous and/or wolf teeth, abscesses, periodontal disease, and more.

Coggins and Health Certificates

Coggins (equine infectious anemia) testing is mandatory for all traveling horses. Our lab can perform regular or same-day Coggins testing and provide you with a health certificate.

Reproduction and Breeding Soundness

At Animal Medical Center, we are pleased to offer our expertise, counsel, and guidance to aid you with your equine reproduction and breeding. We offer reproductive ultrasonography to help track the mare's breeding cycle, to confirm pregnancy, and to monitor their progress.

Artificial insemination services, uterine culture, cytology, and biopsies are available to help increase your mare's likelihood of conception.

General Surgery for Your Horse

General surgical procedures are available for your horse. These procedures include but are not limited to:

  • Castrations
  • Laceration repair
  • Enucleations
  • Mass removals

Sedation and local/general anesthesia will be given if necessary to reduce your horse's stress levels and keep them comfortable during the procedure. Same-day release is available for most surgeries, but hospitalized stall care is available for overnight stays if necessary.

Radiology and Lameness

Digital radiology is available both in-clinic and through our ambulatory service at your farm or ranch. With digital radiology, we do not need to wait on film to develop, we are able to efficiently diagnose your horse within seconds, no matter the issue at hand.

We use top-of-the-line equipment to help ensure that your horse performs to its highest potential and to diagnose lameness issues that can lead to a decline in performance. Digital radiology, ultrasonography, joint injections, and laser therapy are all available tools we use to diagnose and treat lameness. We also offer advanced lameness diagnostics, which includes nerve blocks, helps determine the nature of your horse's lameness, and guide us in initiating treatment plans to help the horse return to optimum performance.

Equine Laser Therapy

We use laser therapy for a wide variety of medical conditions. We have seen positive results after using laser therapy to treat musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions, snake bites, etc.

Ambulatory Care

Ambulatory care is available in Muskogee and the surrounding counties. Our farm call vehicles are able to handle a vast majority of medical and surgical cases in field settings.

My daughter moved her horse to my house 2 months ago. She had no trailer and borrowed one from someone in McAlester. He developed a choke and I was desparate to get a vet out. I use AMC for my dogs but this horse had never been seen. This all happened about 4pm. Dr Barnett rearranged appointments so she could make a ranch call. She did a great job and I am so thankful she came otherwise he would have died. He is 28 and we want to keep him around a few more years.
